Post subject: Week 01 - Adam's rankings - the real deal |
  |
|
I drafted this formula last year using Excel (congrats to Adam's national champ, LSU), and of course I'm using it again this year. Here's the formula:- Only wins vs. 1A teams count. All losses count.
- 3/5 w/l %
- 3/10 opponents' w/l %
- 3/20 opponents' opponents' w/l %
- -.1 for every loss to a lower-division opponent.
- At this point, a team has a subtotal. If the team has beaten someone with >.70000 as a subtotal (any year will have between 10 and 20 such teams), add 1/3 of the difference to the team's subtotal. For example, if LSU (.65000) has beaten Florida (.79000), LSU then adds .09000/3 (.03000) to get their rating of .68000.
- Multiply by 1000 to make it look cooler
Here are my rankings right now (a team is not ranked until it either a) plays a 1A team, or b) loses to a lower-division team):- Southern California 750.00
- Virginia Tech 300.00
I will be updating these every week. Also, about a month from now, I'll put my conference rankings up.

USC sucked the other night. Teams that are number 1 in the country should be penalized if they play like shit and barely squeak out a win against an unranked team that had a terrible defense last year. Work that in to your formula.

So far, the team that is "officially" crowned the national champ is my #1 about 80% of the time.

Work that in to your formula. | I probably won't do this because it would take WAAAAAAAY too much time, but there could be a factor where you calculate how many quarters of the game a team trails. I think USC trailed for two quarters--they could be penalized for that.

You can never have enough time to do things like this. | Funny thing about it--about midway through last year I figured I could use Excel to do this and make it quite simple, and right before the LSU/UF game, LSU was my #1, and Arkansas was my #2. Both were undefeated with quality wins (UGA, Texas). I think both teams lost that very weekend. I thought I'd ruined football.
In February I started with 1869, and a normal year, what with the job and The Family Dinner and all, takes me about a week to calculate.
I can't wait to get to 1958
