Post subject: Racial observations from my workplace |
  |
|
As many of you know, I work at a copy shop. Man, some people bug me. The other day, which was particularly busy, I actually counted out some statistics. Here is the setup of my workplace:- Five copy machines in the self-serve area
- Two copy machines behind the counter
- You have to walk past five copy machines to get to the counter
- There are picture directions on every machine we have
Here's what I observed:- Four out of five white customers stopped at a self-serve machine before reaching the counter. Roughly half of them were in and out without needing any help.
- Nine out of ten black customers went straight to the counter and asked us to make their copies for them, assuming we were able to do it completely. When we pointed out the self-serve machines that would have them in and out within minutes (the wait period for us to take orders was a few hours), about half of them claimed not to know how to work a copy machine. Of those, when we referred to each copier's picture directions, all of them asked, "can you help me do it?"
- Most foreign customers are unable to understand the US copyright laws. Many want to copy their textbooks for friends so they don't have to pay the hefty prices. They do not understand that this is a felony that carries a minimum $30,000 fine. I simply refer to the framed copy of our copyright law on our wall and ignore them for the rest of their visit because I hate them.
Habits I've developed because of this trend:- When a white person walks into the store, I ignore him/her, unless he/she comes straight to the counter (chances are this person is here to pick up an order from the previous day)
- When a black person walks into the store, I walk straight to the counter to save time.
- When a foreign person walks into the store, I think about voting for Pat Buchanan again.
Opinions I've developed because of this trend:- People are inherently self-sufficient, and white people generally realize this.
- People are inherently self-sufficient, and black people have no idea that this is possible.
- There are too many foreign people in this country for too many reasons. In the old days, we got immigrants because of famine and civil rights. Now we get them because of scholarships and study-abroad programs. Dammit.
Anyone care to opine?

I used to work at a competitor of Kinkos called Mail Boxes Etc. (now the UPS Store). I saw the same exact thing... except I used to try to help the good lookin sorority chicks. Our single copies were 10 cents, yet I remember when an older lady came in to make 2 copies and left because another place was 7 cents. Now, she'll waste the savings in just starting her car to go to the extra stop! I also remember the foreigners coming in our store and copying books. I complained to the boss, but he didnt do anything but put a sign up that said that copying was illegal. One foreigner asked if I would do the copies for her... all 700 pages!

I feel like I have been cheated when I have to pay 150 bucks for a 400 page soft cover book. I feel even more cheated when the foreign kids in the class use the department copy machine to make 10 copies of the book that they have gotten from the library, or from some one who has bought it. This situation, first I should have done that I would have $150 more than I do now, but I would be stealing from the school.
I don’t blame the kids that save money and copy books, especially international kids that are accustomed to getting books much cheaper. But when they use equipment and paper that I know I have paid for, I would rather them go to Kinko’s.

That you would get the job done over night, that she should come back in the morning. Ignore her when she comes back.

Georgia has an interesting rule regarding copyrights: If someone asks you once to copy a copyrighted work, tell them no. If he asks twice, you are required by law to call the police.
My job would kick so much more ass if it was like that here.
