Post subject: Weezer -- most important band of the last 10 years? (link) |

link to an MTV article.
A compelling argument, yes, but I find Radiohead and Beck to be more important to music--the future of music in particular--in the last 10 years.
Opinions?

Ween is much better...i'll never forget their 3-hour(!) gig at the House of Blues in New Orleans back in '98...they know how to treat their fans--you're lucky if you get even an hour-and-a-half out of live bands these days!

I agree that Radiohead is by far more important.

All three have some good songs, but i hardly think any of them are all that relevant to the history of music.

I also think Beck is more important than Weezer. Beck is more versatile and was more influential on other good artists, whereas Weezer only influenced shitty bands like Good Charlotte.
And look at the old guys and who they like. Paul McCartney really likes Beck; Davy Jones likes Weezer. That, to me, says a lot.

The article has some strange weaknesses First the most important to music band in the past 15 years was (in my opinion) Nirvana. So to reschedule this judgment to the past 10 years nipping nearly on the death of Kurt Cobain, well its unfortunate. The Author addresses this.
The Author of this article has an indie-rock elitist mentality that is very common in the industry today.

I have never once heard a weezer song that I liked. They pretty much suck, but that's me. Also, I don't really care for beck, he's a loser. But Radiohead is the shit. Good band, good music.

The Author of this article has an indie-rock elitist mentality that is very common in the industry today. | The entire article was written on the understanding that Nirvana was the most important of its time, and that it was possible that the next generation wouldn't have as much to say as did Nirvana, so I thought the main point of the article was compelling.
Not only did Kurt die in '94; so did grunge. The last ten years is a great subject of debate.
The two biggest shake-ups in music just may be the Beatles breaking up and Cobain's death. After 1969, the Stones, Who, Zeppelin, and many other memorable bands had their best moments. Look at who was hot in 1994 besides Nirvana...
Pearl Jam never topped Ten. Soundgarden broke up within a couple of years. Stone Temple Pilots never topped Core. Metallica sucked and enjoyed it. Alice in Chains and Guns 'n' Roses self-destructed.
All that I can think of that was left and that had their best years after 1994 was Beck, Radiohead, and Dave Matthews Band.

um i don't listen to any of those singers/bands. i couldn't even name one song of theirs. so i really don't think they were that influential.

Pearl Jam is still the biggest rock act in the world. They just try to stay under the radar.
