I'm sure all of us have had a bad group here and there for a school project. So tell us your story.

Personally, I more like individual projects. I had group p. in high school and it was bad experience. Most people do not want to do anything if u show that u want (Anne!). Then, when u need to present it, only you speak in front of the class, and overall impression is weak. .
In undergraduate and now graduate all projects are individual....for me much better!

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE GROUP PROJECTS!
First of all, I'm a control freak. I like to be in control.
Second, I'm a perfectionist.. and it drives me crazy when my name has to go on some crappy work that somebody else did.
and Third, I can't stand relying on other people to get stuff done. It sucks when I work hard and do my part, and still get a bad grade because some jerkface slacker decided not to do theirs.
I managed to escape an entire term with no group projects, but next term I have a class called "Communication in Groups" which the entire class is just a big group project. NOOOOOooooooooooooooo!!

I don't like group projects in college because it is just too difficult for 3+ people to find one time when they can all get together. Usually the best time ends up being at night. In my American Lit class we had to do a paper in groups of 2. The teacher paired us all together. Problems arose for some people because their partners ended up dropping the class. For others, their partner just didn't want to meet. My friend, her partner was like that. She'd rarely even show up for class, and the only contribution she made to the paper was some stuff she *copied* out of the textbook. My friend went to the teacher about it, and he told her to just not put her partner's name on the paper.. so she didn't . I didn't particularly like the project, even though my partner wasn't all that bad. It's hard to write a paper together because people have different styles of writing, so it's a constant battle of, "Well I think it would sound better like this..."

well how's this for a philosophy...The University of Phoenix, feels that group work is essential for team buildling and blah blah blah....
So, here's how UOP works. It's 1 night a week, for 4 hours, for 5 weeks. You take one class at a time, and there is alot of coursework for each class. No finals (points and laughs at all of you), so it works well..except...
In each class, about 30% of your grade is determined by a group paper and presentation. How's that for shitty.
The key is...getting with a good group, and staying with them from class to class. In the two classes i've been in, the first group was really good, great planning, great communication, and a great grade on the paper and presentation. The 2nd class, I had changed things up, and got stuck with a crappy group, so i did all the work, and ended with a decent grade.
I very much prefer working alone. Someone in my first group...a college student remind you...thought that the first word of every line....NOT EVERY SENTENCE...

It's not learning when their style of writing is grammatically incorrect and just plain bad.

Yes. It most defiantly can be. Have you ever heard by learning by teaching. I would rather work on a group project with two humble average students than two arrogant better than average students. Hopeful by doing group projects in classes you are learning what kind of qualities allow people to work in groups better. You are not always going to be the ‘better’ person in a group. It is important for students to recognize how to work together in specific types of tasks, what style of planning works best, what method of time management, how and when to communicate with team members that are not as ‘as good’ or ‘as involved’ as others.
It is unfortunate when people are put in groups for school projects and not all the members work together. The group suffers. Guess what, this is exactly what can happen in the work place, depending on the circumstances.
Students need to learn how to deal with this.

Sorry, I don't think working with a General Ed major on an English paper is not going to help me in my job. When you're working, you're working with people who specialize in the same area as you. I had a group project a few weeks ago where we had to develop a thematic unit. That was fine because I was working with another Secondary Education-English major. It was fun because we were able to trade ideas and combine them. And we both knew what we were doing.
My main beef with group projects in college is the schedule conflicts. Always end up meeting at 8:00 at night because everyone's schedule is so different during the day.

I fucking hate group projects and the fucking morons that I always end up being forced to team up with. They all think that being fucking dumbasses and not knowing what to do is funny, or cool. When I bring out my laptop and start working at one of our meetings, it is immediately assumed that I will taking over this whole thing.
Fuck them all. Those fucking morons. I am above them in every aspect of life.
Fucking group projects.
I'm sure being an English Major (secondary ed and writing and culture) will definitely steer me clear of further group project encounters. /sarcasm

Man, it's awful. I'm a Seconday Ed major (English) and I think I've had AT LEAST one group project every semester. This semester I had 3. Two in edci 4465 and one in engl 3070. In 4465 it wasn't so bad, as I described above. Everyone taking that class is going to be an English teacher, so you *usually* end up with good partners. Usually goes that way for all of your edci classes because usually the type that become teachers are the ones that are always stuck doing most of the work in a group.
