So what did we all think of "The Phantom" Personally i loved it but then again i was already in love with the music. Apparently the movie much butchered the book, but isn't that how movies go? Still, I idn't read the book so no bother here. So what did ya'll think?

I wanted my money back after having seen it They really should have gotten singers that had the range of the original cast members. I was really upset to hear the dialogue changes, musical changes, and moving of certain things. GRRRRRRRRR

Actually, the movie was more faithful to the book than the stage version. All the stuff that was added with the backstory of how the Phantom came to be in the Opera house wasn't in the stage version at all..........In the book, its a character just called "The Persian" who brings him to the Opera house. For some reason, The Persian gets left out of most stage versions. Also, all the booby traps weren't in the stage version, yet are in the book. Also, there was not a sword fight in the book OR the stage version.
All this said, I've expressed my opinion on it in an earlier thread. I think Gerard Butler as the Phantom was horribly miscast and that ruined a lot of the movie for me. I spent most of the movie LAUGHING at him. I think when someone tries too hard to be sexy, they become laughable. Listening to the soundtrack, it was obvious he couldn't sing. I went into the theater hoping that his acting would make up for his lack of vocal talents..........as soon as he's shown fully in the flesh, that hope was shattered.........Gerard Butler must have studied acting from the Zoolander school of acting, but he kept hitting those male model poses all through the first act.
I don't think he understood his character at all. I don't think someone raised in as a circus freak and forced to live with a burlap sack over his head, then spends the rest of his childhood underneath an opera house is going to swagger around with that much confidence and arrogance.
All that said, I enjoyed the movie, and I'd probably go see it again, but its really bad. It's visually appealing and pretty to look at, but its the Moulin Rouge version of Phantom of the Opera......and I didn't like Moulin Rouge either.
I think it should be renamed "Handsome Actor Swaggers about Sexily wearing Fashionably Placed Mask"
And honestly, what the fuck was up with those dancing bull fighter boys during "Past the Point of No Return?!!!"

heh, I just couldn't resist...
okay, the movie is a good tool to get people introduced to the "Phantom", if they have already heard the soundtrak and would like a little more detail. It may not be correct detail per-say, but it is close in some respects. The story is all the same, but the details are majorly scewed. For my own tastes and expectations of the movie, having already read the book, I think the director, actors, and everyone else involved (minus the musicians) really botched the job.
In a previous post, the really long one, it was mentioned something along the line of someone wearing bag on head, and childhood under opera house wouldn't have sexy swagger, yadda yadda yadda. That was basically a horribly paraphrased quote. Well, the actor dude playing as the phantom had the attitude in the later portion of the movie. His swagger and overconfident attitude was all right. It was his history that was wrong. He wasn't really part of a circus before making it to the opera house. He was an architect. He designed and built torture devices and chambers for the king of persia, where he met "The Persian", and befriended him. They may have been friends before this, but I'm not sure exactly how or when they became friends, but they did. And I'm not really sure if the persian actually brought him there. I think it was something more along the lines of both of them ran away from persia, and ended up at the opera house.
Well, another area botched by the professionals was the timeline of the story. So many things were cut and moved about. I mean the movie was 2 and a half hours. There was no need to move things around. Plus there was no conveyance of time. Christine and Rouwle, can't spell his name, had their mock engagement for about a weeks time before the Phantom kidnapped her. And he didn't take her during his play. If I remember correctly, which I may not, Rouwle tried to rescue her from the Phantom and the end of the book while Phantom was just finishing the opera.
Well, that's only a little bit of my opinion. I could tell the whole opinion, but that could take a whole book to do.... And one final thing, in case you didn't understand the whole "hand at the level of your eye" thing, the Phantom was a master with a lasso, and would often show off his talent with it to the king of persia by lassoing slaves sent to die in a arena, or wild animals like tigers and stuff. Well, keeping the hand at eye level would cause the lasso to go around your hand as well as your neck. This would in turn prevent you from being strangled imeadiatly and would allow you a chance to get out of being lassoed. I think the movie failed to convey this point. In the book the persian stressed it more, and even had him use a revolver to familarize himself with the position. The persian also went all the way down to the phantom's hiding spot under the opera house. Unlike little miss lady who only went down some stairs..... well, that's it... I mean it this time.

hrm........its been a really long time since I read the book. Probably 10 years. I can't remember when he took her either, but didn't Raoul get caught in a booby trap that involved a grasshopper and a cricket? Like, she had to turn one or the other that would signify who she chose?
They did put one of his torture devices in the movie, with the room full of mirrors.

well, the mirror room in the movie wasn't even close to the mirror room in the book. There wasn't a tree. The grasshopper and cricket was while they were in the mirror room in the book. There were two boxes on this mantle I think, one containing each bug. She could only save one person so she had to choose if it would be Rou-whatever-his-name-is or the persian. It has been a while so I may be mistaken. It could also be she had to choose would die at some earlier point in the story, but I think it was during the mirror room....

It was OK. I didn't really love it, but I didn't hate it either. I like the first half and was really bored during the second half. *shrug* But the girl I'm dating loves it, so I'm going to watch it again when it comes on video. lol

I love the story of the Phantom of the Opera, and the music, and this movie sucked. I was extremely disappointed.
