Interesting article I read:
Ion Pacepa, the commander of Romanian Secret Service (equivalent of KGB and CIA) who defected to USA in 1978 believes that Kofi Annan tries to reform UN with the help of communists. He published an article last week in National Review (newspaper that has a republican orientation) in which he attacked very strong the UN and the current leaders and big names in UN. At one moment Pacepa questioned how Kofi Annan wants to reform UN with the help of people like Evgheni Primakov (the former head of KGB which Pacepa used to visit often while he was the head of the Romanian Secret Service).
In other articles Ion Pacepa calls UN a devil organization that tries to bring war between USA and different arabian countries where some UN leaders have strong ties. An example is the same Evgheni Primakov which Pacepa says that has many "friends and connections" both in Iran and current power in Irak. Pacepa goes further and says that actually the cold war never ended and that different "pro-european"organizations (UN has been this way since US entered in Irak) are full of former communists members. He says that 4 out of 5 members in UN are former friends with him and that they couldn't be former friends of him if they were not communists during the period when he was the chief of Espionage in Romania.
Pacepa suggests that UN should be reformed and that all people with former communists ties should be erased from that organization if one wants to have a real United Nation organization and not a United Communist Nation Organization...
Pacepa is the highest rank defector from the former Soviet information system and defect to US in 1978. He is also known to be one of the top targets that Ceausescu (former Romanian dictator) asked Carlos the Jackal to kill. Ceausescu is known to have paid more than $1 million dollars to Carlos to kill Pacepa on US soil. Also on Pacepa's head ceausescu put another $2 million dollars bounty and a death sentence was simultaneously approved. Interesting but these were cancelled in 1999 which is 10 years after Ceausescu was over-thrown by romanian people (bloody revolution in 1989). In other words if Pacepa came in Romania anytime between 1990to 1999 he would have risked to be killed and this would have been legal.
For more than 20 years Pacepa was hidden by US government on the US territory and as of the moment nobody knows his location although he regularly publishes in newspapers and different political magazines. It is believed that the information that Pacepa gave to CIA and other information services in US at the time he defected was vital for bringing Soviet Union down. Until that moment few information escaped Soviet Union and espionage activities on the territory of Soviet Union were very risky being known that 30% of the total activities were succesfull.

an interesting detail is that although the death sentence was cancelled the reason for which Pacepa is still hidden is that at least two romanian/russian teams (dispatched one in 1987 and one in 1989) are still looking for him on US soil.
Washington Times says in 2003:
" At least two assassination teams were dispatched to the U.S. to gun down Mr. Pacepa. Romania's agents in the U.S. are still looking for him — and this despite Romania's two-year mandate on the U.N. Security Council, which began Jan. 6, its new (Nov. 21, 2003) NATO membership, and the decision of its own Supreme Court."
The members of this "spy forces" are usual people that can make a perfect neighbour for years only to be activated on command. They are known as sleeping weapons because they usually either stay for a long time in the "host country" (with no initial objective) or they start their activity after couple of years from the moment they arrive in the "host country". In several reports, made public after the cold war, CIA admitted that doesn't know all the sleeping agents on the US territory but that some of them may have became inofensive because they weren't used for a long time and they just entered a normal life.
Don't forget that the same sleeping agents helped the current release (Spring of 2005) of the three romanian and one french reporter kidnapped in Irak. And it was public that they were deployed in Irak in 1987 by Ceausescu and never used since then.
The people that make this teams were usually "street kids" abandoned by their parents. They were trained in big camps and their last objective was to kill. At the same time teams of doctors administered different medicines to make them stronger (many probably died). A lot of this is believed to actually be experiments on human beings. Basically they were killing machines fed with physical training and specialized information on how to make a bomb out of "anything" and how to improvise.
These teams are also known death's long arm teams. Ceausescu had couple of hundreds persons highly trained and used in high profile activities and another thousands of almost ready troups that tried to turn the result during the Revolution in 1989. It is believed that many defected as sleeping subjects and commands from either romanian or russian centers (romania does not have it anymore- at least officially) can activate them for different operations.
