actually soccer is pretty popular in the south....just not louisiana. Florida and Georgia are hotbeds for soccer, and from what I can see, they are in the south.
I was suprised that LSU didn't have a mens team...

foot+ball... so no hands on the ball
As far as I know neither rugby nor american football requires no use of hands... so still soccer is the only real football (even from the words point of view).
q.e.d.

but if we don't call it football what will we call it? it has been called football ever since it was invented. i think soccer just wanted to be an ass and try to call itself football so it could get actual footbal fans to watch it under false pretenses. why can't soccer just be soccer like it's always been?

Hi!
First don't take it hard I only meant to make a joke and play with the words (although a non-english speaker may not play to well with the english words... but at least I tried).
Second as far as I know soccer has been around for more years than American football give me some references if I am wrong. Soccer was invented in England but simultaneously received a lot of attention in Italy (where by the way is called fotbal). Many other countries call it fotbal... in other words it was just a coincidence (or not?) that the american football started to become known as football.
If we are to be correct then there is football (fotbal) and American Football (similar with rugby). Thus being around for a longer time than American Football I don;t see any way (except a time machine) to get the name from American Football

edit:
P.S.: if you go to the link http://worldsoccer.about.com/cs/historyandstats/a/sochistart.htm
then you can read a little bit about the history of football... you would see that soccer=footbal has been around for thousands of years (I knew it was invented in England coupld of hundreds of years ago... which would have been enough anyway for the argument that it was invented before the American Football was around; anyway it seems that Chineses played a similar game 3000 years ago... pretty damn long time ago...).
Ok, it has definitely changed over the time but the idea is the same. More than that (I don't know if that site tells you) soccer=footbal is also interesting from the fact that english persons played it at the beginning as a game of fertility...yes, fertility (I didn't get the words wrong this time...). You may find more about this on the web if you are interested.

Alright, here's my 2 cents:
I hate soccer. It's boring. Physically challenging - yes. Exciting - no.
The botom line is if I want to see a bunch of people run around in shorts all day without scoring any points, I'll watch a track meet.
Also, when a riot breaks out in the stands (and you know one will), what do they use to fight? Their feet? NO - their HANDS! Fucking hypocrites.
