Post subject: LA is GOP Country |
  |
|
Did anyone read the letters to the editor in The Reveille today? Someone actually wrote the following:
| Quote: | | On Saturday, the voters of Louisiana sent a strong message to Washington, that George W. Bush and his republican friends do not run Louisiana. The voters proved the power of the people by going out to vote in record numbers. |
The headline was appropriately titled "La. not republican ground in 2004".
This is really quite funny. First of all, turnout for the Nov. 15 runoff was unofficially 50.6%, hardly record turnout. Secondly, in 2000, George W. received 135,527 more votes than Gore, or roughly 53% to 45%. And if you look at the makeup of our Congressional delegation, you find that out of 7 congressional districts, four are Republican (and the Rodney Alexander up in the 5th Cong district won against the Republican by only 1,000 votes). Clearly, it is absurd to suggest that Louisiana is not a republican state. Although we have many more registered democrats, when it comes to voting on a national level, we more often times than not choose the Republican.

I did see that particular letter to the editor, and I thought it was asinine. Once again, people care far too much about the bipartisan BS. I don't even know why the Reveille felt the need to print the letter; it was so irrelevant. Somehow, I think Bush has bigger fish to fry than whether or not the governor of Louisiana is Republican or Democrat. It was not only asinine, but closed-minded and prejudiced.
Ugh.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Bush, and this next election's going to suck in general, cause I'm not seeing any good options. Oh, I'll still vote, since I'm of the opinion that if you don't vote, you don't have a right to whine about who's in office, but I'll probably be voting for a 3rd party.
Which serves two purposes. It takes a little more power away from the bipartisan political machine, and that way I really end up voting for who I think is best, not who has the best shot at winning.
