If anybody cares...but i know some of these people...so here:

Brazell, Moffitt Qualify for U.S. Olympic Team
07/11/04

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- LSU hurdler Bennie Brazell and jumper John Moffitt both punched their tickets to Athens, Greece Sunday, qualifying for the 2004 Summer Games at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials.

Brazell, a junior out of Houston, Texas, advanced by virtue of a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Brazell turned in an outstanding performance, clocking a personal record of 48.05 to finish behind national champion James Carter (47.6Cool and runner-up Angelo Taylor (48.03).

Brazell's time also shattered the LSU school record in the event, bettering the previous mark of 48.80 he set as a freshman in 2002.

Brazell is just the third Tiger in school history to ever qualify for the Olympics in the 400 hurdles as Glen "Slats" Hardin (1932 and 1936) and his son Billy Hardin (1964) both did so."

Moffitt advanced to Athens after placing third in the long jump competition. The Winnsboro, La., native jumped 26-5 3/4 on his sixth and final jump of the day to earn the Olympic bid.

Dwight Phillips won the national title in the event, jumping 27-2 on his first attempt, while Tony Allmond placed second with a distance of 26-7.

2000 Olympian and former LSU great Walter Davis, just missed an automatic bid in the long jump, finishing fourth overall with a leap of 25-11 1/2. Having already met the Olympic "A" standard in the event, Davis could still possibly make the team as Allmond has yet to reach the standard. Allmond has until August 9 to meet the standard of 26-10 1/2. If he fails to do so, Davis will replace him on the Olympic team.

In qualifying round action, sophomore Kelly Willie turned in a sensational performance in the men's 400 meters. The Houston native broke the 45-second barrier for just the third time in his career, clocking a personal record of 44.63 to not only win his heat, but advance with the field's fastest qualifying mark.

Former Tiger Derrick Brew also advanced to Monday's semifinal round, placing second in his heat, and ninth overall, with a time of 45.49.

Other athletes in action Sunday included former Tiger Russ Buller and former Lady Tiger Nicole Toney.

Buller placed eighth in the pole vault, clearing 18-8 1/4, while Toney finished 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 42-4.

In Saturday's action, LSU great Muna Lee missed the cut in the women's 100 meters, finishing sixth in the finals with a time of 11.17. Lee could still make the trip to Athens as part of the 4x100-meter relay pool. The final decision on the six athletes that will represent the United States as part of the short relay squad will be announced August 9.

Competition from the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex and the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials will continue tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. (CT).

I know Bennie... this is an awesome way to finish the year at LSU. And to blow my own trumpet for a minute, there will be an article in tomorrow's Tiger Weekly about Bennie and John qualifying. Plus, Derrick Brew and Kelly Willie qualified for the 400m finals with the two fastest times, so Bennie and John could well have plenty of company in Athens. If only they had lights...

I think some how I ended up studying next to the hurdler person one night at Highland Coffees. A bunch of people were preparing for a history exam or something. I learned a lot just listening! But someone mentioned that she was a kick-ass track star.

It's funny who you bump into and where sometimes.

wow, old thread.....

current fastest time in the 400 is held by:

Kellie Willie 45.42

Xavier Carter (LSU FB player) currently holds the fastest time in the 100 and the 200....

100- 10.12
200- 20.13

I think both make him the fastest man in the world right now...

Speaking of World's Fastest men...

My Great Great Grandfather was the World's Fastest Foot Racer in his day.

I'll post a scanning of his obit I found reprinted in the New York Times.

Over the years I would have hoped that something about him would have cropped up online but it doesn't seem to have happened yet. So this is me doing that.

For now this is the bibliography on the article. Apparently, The New York Times allows you to pay them for articles from their archives. I was just happy I found it when I searched. I'll just scan my copy when I find it.

His name was Eli Albert Tharnish aka E.A. Tharnish. Also went by Al Tharnish.
