By Rob KriegerAccording to Sigmund Freud, there are two principals at work in our society, the “pleasure principal” and the “reality principal.” The pleasure principal refers to our want for pleasure, sex or a relationship of some sort that would cause pleasure; while the reality principal refers to our understanding that the pleasure principal must be suppressed in order to do what needs to be done, work or other responsibilities in our lives. In our current society, this repression of pleasure can be seen a lot, especially in college when exams, homework, projects, work, and other activities take up much of our time. However, many college students are still finding ways to satisfy their pleasure principal. So how is our society satiating the need for pleasure while remaining balanced with their work?
