Ok, I have to participate in an in class debate for English and I am in charge of the rebuttle.

Our side of the arguement is that SUVs are not safe, pollution, etc.

But, I need some ideas on what the opposition might say so I can be prepared.

Better yet, just tell me. SUVs : Pro? Con? Why?

This would be a major help! Thnx sooo much!

SUVs are safe for people in the car, but dangerous to people outside the car. They waste gas, but I have a car that gets 8 miles to the gallon, so... I've got no room to talk. Laughing

Don't get drawn into the "High Rollover Rate" you will lose that point quickly if they have done their research.

Its true that SUV's rollover rate is twice as high as cars, however, the rollover rate for cars is only 1 in 100,00. So for SUV's thats 1 in 50,000.

If they look unprepared throw out the twice as likely, but if they have it together, don't mention it.

Its not true? What Year are you looking at?

The simple fact: On average the larger your passenger vehicle is (car, SUV, truck) the more likely you will die in an accident.

F=ma

more mass more force, more energy, more risk.

For your cons argument I would look at individual SUV’s.
For example the most popular ones, like the Explorer.
http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2004-02-04-rollovers_x.htm
“the rollover risk in a one-vehicle crash is 30% to 40%”
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/rollover/etc/before.html
Explorers are 16 times as likely to roll over than a typical family car.

Typical passenger SUV’s have a 12% role over risk in accidents, cars 3-4%.
Roleover is the highest cause of fatality.
http://www.accidentreconstruction.com/news/may00/052500a.html

You are three times as likely to die in a SUV rollover, compared to cars, SUVs are 3 or 4 times as likely to role over.
The simple math says you are 10 times as like to flip over and die if you are in an SUV accident.

http://www.driveandstayalive.com/info%20section/news/individual%20news%20articles/x_040326_3000-deaths-a-day_roadsafe.htm

1 million deaths on the highways every year 20 times that in injuries.
NHTSA states that SUVs and pickup trucks account for 78 percent of all passenger-vehicle occupant rollover fatalities.

SUV’s also have high ejection fatality’s.

But If you are in a SUV/Truck and you hit a car the people in the car statically have about twice the chance of death.

http://www.consumersunion.org/rollover/faq.html

about 32% of fatalities are from role over. What is 32% of 1.2 million?

This is a very good paper on vehicle deaths.

Since I work for a toyota dealership, the rollover rate is not bad in any of our SUV's. Some are bad on gas and some are good like the rav4. I haven't had anyone ask me about the rollover thing with any of our SUV's. If your doin' 90, yea you may be able to flip it. Normal driving, no.

Talking out your ass. Any four by can be tipped / flipped by some one who knows what they are doing, or accidentally by some one who does not.

If you drive like an ass, yes. If you get "T" boned by something bigger then you, yes. Not likely to happen if you drive like your supposed to. yes accidents happen and that's why there's insurance. Laughing

If you drive like an ass, could you be more scientific? I don’t think any one is saying that a car/truck/suv flips it self over. The rollover tests are in reference to accidents, not doing 15 in a parking lot.
People swerve and hit the breaks to avoid road hazards, accidents, whatever, and flip SUVs.
