By Laura GreeneThe LSU Board of Supervisors unanimously approved former NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe Wednesday to become LSU’s seventh chancellor, raising concerns among several members of the LSU community.
O’Keefe, who has been an official candidate for less than one week, accepted the position, beating out more than 20 public contenders.
The search committee had been seeking a replacement chancellor since the last chancellor, Mark Emmert, left in June to serve as president of the University of Washington.
Currently, William Jenkins, LSU system president and interim chancellor, is negotiating O’Keefe’s compensation package, which is expected to be settled within days. Former Chancellor Emmert earned almost $500,000, a significantly larger sum than most university chancellors’ salaries. O’Keefe’s salary at NASA was $168,000.
