I bought a guitar from a friend. Actually I bought an Ibanez electric guitar, amp and case. I don't know how to play it. The reason I bought it is a whole separate and irrelevant story. I'm just wondering if anyone on here knows how to play a guitar and if so would you be willing to help me learn?

Pick your favorite band and learn all their music. Learn how to read tabs, its not difficult. You can get a lot of stuff online.

and most of all, BE PATIENT. It doesnt come over night, more like years. Ive been playing for almost 9 years now and there is still a lot to learn. If you ever want to get together and play, let me know. A friend told me once that if you play with people that are better than you it either makes you want to play more, or makes you want to give up. I would be happy to show you a couple things though.[/url]

My advice is find a basic chord sheet somewhere on the internet. Then find them, strum a few times, then go to the next chord.
After you think you found the chord okay (which will be a few weeks) then start changing the chord while you're strumming. If you want an easy way to start changing, go from a G chord, D chord, C chord, then back to D. Just do this for any Johnny Cash song, and you'll be fine.
Then once you can move the chord while strumming, find an easy song to play and play along with it.

I just started playing guitar a few weeks ago. landon has a good point, but I would go as far to suggest to you "fender presents: getting started on electric guitar" it can be found easly on bit torrent, I don’t feel so bad about that because you can also get it at the library. My gf has been doing it along with learning to play songs, I have not. She is learning the music theory part of it much faster.
Speaking of the library they have all kinds of great books you can read and practice with.

Tabs are the way to go man. If you learn to read tabs you can teach yourself almost anything. I have been playing a few years and thats what I use and its great. Especially if you get the Guitar Pro program.

The best song to start with is "Not Fade Away" by Buddy Holly. You can find its tabs on tabcrawler.com. It's easy to learn, it sounds good, and it's simple to play. So much can stem from that one song.
You now have the power of rock. Please use it only for good.

Or you can be a real guitar player...
I learned how to read notes before anything else. Why? because I wanted to learn how to play, instead of pretending to be good by learning fingerings for only certain songs rather than being able to play anything.
I'm not saying TABS are bad, because I use them now too. But please learn how to play it before you start faking it.
On a different note. I just bought a new acoustic guitar. Washburn D100.

Shenanigans.
It is unreasonable to suggest to someone learning to play guitar to learn to site read simple sheet music before anything else. How do you practice site reading music with out songs (or drills) Guitar sheet music is ridicules looking, normally the chord form is above the staff anyway. If you plan to learn to play popular music then it is easier to find it in tablature.

I agree with trunks. None of the Beatles could read music, and they are one of the most popular bands ever. Reading music has nothing to do with playing.

All I know is that my friend and I started playing at the same time, and he can only read TABs, and I'm about 50% better than him at guitar. And yes, he practices just as much as I did.
It could have something to do with my natural music ability, but I still think that being able to read music too has helped me.

They could have been real guitar players.
