AWE, I noticed in another post that you said
| Quote: | | I'm just trying to figure out what I haven't done promotionally sofar. Most people at LSU have name recognition of the site. |
- since you ask..I know one thing that is holding back traffic. The messages inside the message board aren't searchable. That makes tons of keywords and hits that you are missing out on. I'm running a nuke site, also, and Google and other bots don't search very deeply into sites when they use the ? query tags in the URl.
There is supposedly a script called Googletap at www.nukecops.com, that will automatically rewrite your URL to not include the query tags. To use the script, you would have to have the Apache mod_rewrite module installed on your server. I haven't tried it yet, but I will soon.
In the interim, I have saved a lot of my site as static html pages, and linked to it from an archive page. I'm going to see how that works.[/quote]

I'm trying to figure out one last problem.. the message board block on the front page doesn't seem to be gelling..
this is 6.5 actually...
um.. all you really have to do it replace your header.php, footer.php and .htaccess files in your root nuke directory.. just make sure anything you may have customely done to your previous footer/header files also gets copied over to the new header/footer files..
and basically read a bunch of the threads on nukecops.. it took a while for me to even find out how to install it.. they didn't document very well.. and also I had to add some stuff into the files I ended up downloading from them from one of the threads there.. let me know and I can email you the files I have so you won't have to go through all the crap I just did.

Just changed something up a bit...
Installed something called GT-NExtGEn http://gt.audioslaved.com/
The version I got from NukeCops wasn't gelling with the forums block that we had installed and was pretty much an instant hit.
And I gave up trying to figure out how to make the block work with Google Tap and I tested GT-NextGen and it seemed to do the trick.. so I'm happy with that for now.
The Forum Block is back.

Cool. I've been kind of hesitant to do it, because I don't want to mess my database up, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. I might do a complete site backup and give nextgen a try tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

I'm not even sure if it edits the database directly.. however I'm ignorant about what the script is actually doing. All it really does it translates php files into html files using apache.
Give it a shot.. and yes.. backing up is a good idea.. ALWAYS backup

I am using Forum Host right now on MJSco. (because I don't want to write a mb myself). I think I am about to go to BB though. It seems to be the standard these days.

a lot of people use some other one too... called Invision Board. I'm not sure if it's free though, but it's about the same calibre as phpBB ..

AWE,
It's been a little while now. Are you noticing any increase in traffic yet? Do you know if the site has been re-indexed since you installed it?

I think we JUST got reindexed by google today. And I think TigerWeekly got reindexed yesterday.
We seem to always have inktomi on the site.. lots of activity from them.
MS_Analysis listed over 300 hits from google bot today for TigerU and something in that ballpark for TigerWeekly yesterday.
So we should be getting some more search engine traffic soon.
Below is from our webhost stats (AWstats).. this will get updated at around 5am (in 5 or so hours). I'll post a reply with the updated data and you should see a considerable jump in google hits. (same thing happened for TigerWeekly today)
Robots/Spiders visitors (Top 25) - Full list - Last visit (for February sofar)
8 different robots Hits Bandwidth Last visit
Inktomi Slurp 2522 53.87 MB 12 Feb 2004 - 01:32
Unknown robot (identified by 'crawl') 411 9.56 MB 11 Feb 2004 - 13:39
Fast-Webcrawler (AllTheWeb) 182 4.15 MB 09 Feb 2004 - 22:25
WISENutbot (Looksmart) 79 860.00 KB 06 Feb 2004 - 05:55
Googlebot (Google) 15 513.35 KB 12 Feb 2004 - 02:43
Unknown robot (identified by 'robot') 10 208.86 KB 12 Feb 2004 - 02:58
Alexa (IA Archiver) 1 20.10 KB 01 Feb 2004 - 01:32

AWE, on an unrelated subject, I am fooling around with a PHP script called OS Commerce. A friend of mine wanted to sell some stuff online, so I told her I'd try setting something up. I think it is turning out pretty good, but I still have some work to do. Customizing it is very similar to customizing Nuke. Their home page is http://www.oscommerce.com
The site:
http://www.sewtinyshop.com/store
Once the site is done, you won't have to enter /store to get there, I just currently have the home URL pointing to an 'under construction' page.
I know using portals and scripts isn't very original, but it's just so much easier than trying to build something from scratch, especially if you want to make it dynamic content. Why reinvent the wheel?
