Okay, so for my business english class, we have to pick a problem on campus, prove that it is indeed a problem, and then propose steps to make it better. Soooo, Do you guys feel safe on campus? How is the lighting in parking lots, the quad, and other areas of campus? What improvements can be made? You don't need to leave any personal info, I just need student input and data to show we researched it. Thanks ahead of time!

Conducting a public poll is a form of research. It will show whether or not people think there is a problem with safety on campus, which is also something I listed we had to do with my post above.
Research or not, the poll results are relevant to the information I need to collect for the project.

It does seem that most people perceive that there is a safety problem on campus. However, unless crime victims are not coming forward to the police--or the campus newspapers are just not reporting many of the crimes as they happen--as far as I can tell, the problem is just that: a perception. Of course, I do realize that I could be wrong, and the campus could really have a crime problem. I used to deliver the independent student newspaper all around campus in the dark, early-morning hours, and I never had any problems. Each time I delivered the papers, which was at like 4:00 a.m., there was always a person here or there passing through the Quad. Why the heck were they walking on that (non-residential) part of campus at that time of night? I suppose that they could have been criminals looking for prey, but I suspect that they were more likely to be grad students doing research into the late, wee hours of the night, because they certainly didn't try to rob me of anything...

I believe one of the major safety problems on the LSU campus is the big ass pot holes in the parking lots. I have seen a few people slip on the rocks from the holes and i have seen many trip on the holes there self. Some hit the ground but some of them were able to recover before they hit the ground. I believe this will become a major problem soon if LSU doesn't fix the holes.

The main complaint that I hear from students is probably the lack of parking spaces available for the women's dorms, especially in the Herget Hall/Miller Hall vicinity (perhaps the parking was sufficient back in the 1960's when the dorms were originally built and few students owned cars). Female students understandably don't want to have to park far away (like on the other side of the lake) and then walk back to their dorms alone in the middle of the night. Now, LSU has improved lighting there a great deal and added a few parking spaces, but the parking is still woefully insufficient for 21st century standards, a time where pretty much ALL students own vehicles. There really isn't much more room available for additional parking spaces and the lighting is about as good as it can get there now. The only solution that I can think of there would to go with the idea that students who live on campus can't park on campus--i.e. only let commuting students park on campus. This idea is very controversial, but I just don't see where else more parking spaces can be added. Otherwise, if LSU isn't already doing this, a campus police officer could permanently stationed in that area during nightime hours, assuming that they have a large enough police force to do so (I do see officers patrolling around the library and Kirby Smith dorm all the time at night)...

I think the biggest problem on LSU's campus is that there isnt a turning lane on Highland Road. Think about it... how many times have you had to sit and wait because someone was waiting to turn left? And what about these emergency vehicles? Have any of you seen them wait because traffic was backed up because #1 people cant get over and #2 someone way up is wanting to turn but cant because of traffic from the other end.

Who would rob a college student? Aren't they all pretty much broke. I mean that has to be a pretty dumb criminal to hang out robbing college students. Yeah there is the fact that they all collect in certain areas (campus) making it easier to hit multiple targets in a shorter time but the effort:gain ratio would probably be pretty shitty.

This is not a public" " site.
First students, now people, your lowering your
standards as to the people you want to hear from.
Unless your doing a project on how much the internet sucks your results are going to be a small steaming stack.
a sample of 10 people from a campus or 35k is not a good poll.

I live on campus in Miller..parking is so not a problem. Yes...you may have to walk a bit..I walk from the Rec to Miller when I park and then its so well lit that no one would try to get you. Also, campus police are always around at night. They just roam the lots of the res halls like crazy.
The places that concern me the most are the walkways b/t the Laville's by the patio to get to Miller. That shit aint safe. Neither is the walkway near the Pentagon cafeteria. The incident in the apartments are not a point of concernt to me anymore, because ResLife is implementing a plan about loitering in public areas. We shall see how that goes, and I'm sure it will upset a few people but it's safer that way.
