Well now that we are in Iraq and Saddam is out and the new government is on it's way in, what should our timetable for withdrawal be? Personally I think we made the mess so now we should clean it up and see it all the way through. I don't think we will be able to pull out to any extent anytime soon because of the insurgency. I also think that if we stay there much longer the insurgency is just going to get worse and worse. It is starting to look like they won't be needing any foreign fighters pretty soon because the citizens of Iraq are growing increasingly tired of our presence. This is nothing new however, even in countries that asked for our military assistance in the past we are always protested against by the citizens after we have helped them out. I would hope that by now our government would have a plan for dealing with these problems. I am afraisd that we are going to have to stay in Iraq for a long time if the new puppets er government there is going to stand any chance of staying in power. I still stand by my opinion that the war was and still is a mistake but if we leave now it will all be for nothing.

I agree with the President on this “when to leave” issue. It is to early to make a timetable for withdrawal. Nation building is a long process. If we set a time table today and then do not follow it that might lead to much more resentment than our current policy “we will leave when the Iraqis are ready for the US troops to leave”.

When Iraq's Legislature asks us to leave. So far, the war has been a complete success. There is a democratic government that has taken root, and people are voting instead of being used as human shields.
In my opinion, the liberation of millions is worth the death of thousands. Thank God that America agrees with me because I'd rather my national anthem be "The Star-Spangled Banner" and not "Dixie."

AT the same time... even killing Saddam doesn't mean anything more than symbolic victory. You have to remember that Saddam is just the president. OK, he may not be the best president with the best intentions for his people but he is ONLY the president. There is an entire system behind him that helped him rule the country for many years. That systems is composed of: military leaders, drug leaders, Bin_laden like leaders. Eliminating Saddam does NOT end the war. As far as I remember the purpose of the war was NOT that Saddam be eliminated but the country be put on democratic roots and a new democratic government should rule over a new democratic country. Well, people this can not be done overnight only arresting Saddam...
At the same time there may be some interests in the area and the US military leaders may also want to get some influence in the area (it is a good strategic point and don't forget that there are some other hot points over there... in future you may need to re-deploy forces... think about Iran... North Korea... etc.). Oil is another factor... you need to pay for this war. Irakian oil is a good way to do it, isn't it?
But bottom line is that Irak can not be democratic only by a futile replacement of Saddam Hussein. America should stay there and hunt to the last one the so called "fighters for peace". That crap thing was made up by terrorists such that they would get influence (idiomatic influence) over poor (and usually not well educated) irakian people. Before starting to express your opinions think about next questions:
Would you like to leave in a country that fries your wife if she does uncover her head?
Would you like to leave in a country where you can't choose who's leading you?
Would you like to leave in a country where if you don't say "saddam I love you" you risk AT LEAST to be killed? (your kids can risk the same thing and that's why I said at least).
Would you like to leave in a country where if you are an athlete and didn't win the gold medal in Olympics you are put in jail and day by day they beat you? (Saddam's son was in charge with this)
Would you like to leave in a country where you can only be muslim? (nothing wrong with muslim religion but maybe you want to be orthodox? or catholic? or some other religion?)
Would you like to leave in a country where the leaders drive Mercedes and all you can afford is walking?
Would you like to leave in a country where they steal your freedom?
Would you like to leave in this country and all the other countries not to help you because they wouldn't "interfere" with Saddam?
I don't know about you... but I certainly would answer NO to all of the above.
I do not blame anyone and I do not want to be understood wrong but sometimes I have the impression that many people that lived only in democratic countries tend to see a different reality. They can't conceive what a dictator is. Well, let me tell you (more like a joke): I would put those people in a communism like country for 10 years and after that I would re-ask them the same questions. I am more than sure that they will change their opinions...
