one trick that can be used in this kind of problems.
Look in the text and you see you are asked to add several times the number 1000. How many times? 4 times... this means 4000 from a single shoot and this way you got rid of all of the 1000 numbers. After that look for the small numbers 40,30,20,10 and they add up to 100... add to the previous and you get 4100  You may find this easier than going step by step as they advise you from their text... they took care to put some traps as you would see bellow...
Usually these type of problems are phrased in such a way that you first add 40 to 1000 .. add again 30.. then 1000 such that you "would" loose track of what you added... also last sum that you get if you do it their way is 4090... which (since you are asked to do it in your head) can be confused to be 4990
