I know that we are just now wrapping up Tropical Storm Cindy's damage in the southern part of our state, but now Hurricane Dennis is already heading directly towards us. The new 72-hour-warning evacuation plans could be enacted soon...

From today's AP wire:

"In Louisiana, preparations for Dennis were delayed by the aftermath of Cindy, which caught many by surprise when it moved ashore Tuesday night with 8 inches of rain and 70-mph winds that knocked out power to about 287,000 customers, the largest blackout since Hurricane Betsy 40 years ago.

An estimated 100,000 customers were still without power Thursday, forcing many people — especially the sick, elderly and families with infants — to buy generators or evacuate to hotels to make it through another hot and sticky day."

how can a tropical storm catch us off guard? it's all they talk about on the news....

and yes, hurricanes are amazing for the economy, as my hotel booked up solid from saturday-wednesday, in the span of 6 hours yesterday.

and no, we didn't jack the prices up...too much.

I want to know the hell a tropical storm came ashore anywhere in Louisiana and we didn't get a damn drop of rain out of it?

Power went out here (at my house in Baton Rouge) for about 30 mins.. and I didn't notice any rain.. I figured it was something residual from all the power going out down in New Orleans.

I guess it depends on your definition of "blown away," as different lots are affected differently by the strength and angle of extremely high winds and rain... The last hurricane that really wind-damaged stuff all over the entire city was Hurricane Andrew about 12 years ago. The last real flood-damaging storm was Tropical Storm Allison about 4 years ago...

Well all models have been gradually moving further west. So, far the models are pointing to Miss/Bama border and the strike zone has stretched towards New Orleans.

There is also a new low system that was holding it from us, but by the weekend, that will dissipate and the direction Dennis has been taking could bring it dangerously close to the Louisiana/Miss border.

Just a thought for this otherwise dead thread...

hurricane shmurricane who cares. just go about your buisiness as usual. If we all run and hide and allow this storm to disrupt our lives then it has already won. Don't you people see that is exactly what these tropical storms want us to do? They want us to live in fear of them but we will not allow these enemies of freedom to prevail.
