Post subject: The World's Most Retarded Policy |

I am an incoming freshman who plans to live on campus, so that leaves me in a dorm. After looking at the choices, and seeing some of the places in person I settled for a first choice of West Laville and a second choice of Kirby-Smith and no preference for third. When they posted up the housing assignments Laville didn't have any openings (Non-Honors student, but high enough ACT for ellibility if they had room) and I was moved into Kirby-Smith and because I figured the Laville posting was a long shot anyway, all was right with the world.
Flash forward to the day after I pay the fee bill, and I notice on the statement that there was a rent refund. So I run to the housing assignment page and lo and behold, I was moved to McVoy with out any action whatsoever on my part.
So today I called up the Dept. of Res Life to try to get to the bottom of it. Apparently, what they did was take my first choice of dorm and look for dorm openings that were geographically close to it and moved my assignment WITHOUT TALKING TO ME FIRST. I was completely happy where I was because its location looked convienent on a map, and because the unique facilities there (i.e. suite bathroom as opposed to hall one....so sue me, I 'd rather privacy). Whats the entire point of having a first choice/second choice/third choice on the application if they will disregard it and place you where they want indepentant of what you put down? That policy is a good idea in a campus where all the dorm buildings are carbon copies in all but location, but that isn't the case here.
And almost as soon as they kicked me out of my slot, others moved in, so now my only hope of going back is that of others having gone through the same thing and wishing to go back themselves. Personally, if they don't have me in a Kirby posting within the next week, I am calling again with the intent to raise hell. I was advised to apply for housing again to ensure I get what I want, and so I applied back in fucking October....why the hell should I not get what I want because of a idiotic move on their part without my consent or advisement.

Yup... Floors 12 and 14 (the living room suites) have doors on the bathrooms...
The rooms on the first floor (yes there are some.. hidden..) are all single occupancy..
Floors 2 through 11 have no door on the bathroom (at least as of 1999) ... You can, however put up a shower curtain...
and you only have to share that bathroom with 3 other people, as opposed to 15-20 people..

As someone who works in Res Life, they try to accomodate you geographically because they figure you choose that buildign based on class location. I would call 578-8663 and ask for assignments because they can still move you around, but you should do this promptly on Monday. Yes, Kirby has no doors on the bathroom but the toilet is kinda in the wall to where you could tell ur roomie..hey im using it..and they understand and people can use the sinks without seeing you. McVoy is an excellent res hall. It is near the convenience store and also, really close to the Rec..with TONS of parking like Kirby. If you have any qustions however, please call that number because they can help you TONS and they are not as bad as you think. McVoy is actually ranked higher in facilities and stuff than Kirby..best of LUCK!

I understand the policy Aim-z put its piss poor that they don't ask the residents first. At the very least mail a notification with an option to reply within a week to prevent the move. And yea, Pho is right, It's all about who you know. Hope your networking skills are honed up!

I realize it could anger people, but imagine how many people they would have to call to move around. I've been moved around many times in Res Life..when I was a freshman, I went from Graham, to McVoy, to Blake, and never got a call. Then, I looked to LSU as a big university and I shouldn't complain, but my mother called about my McVoy assignment and I got moved to Blake..I didn't know a soul and Res Life does not take anything like that into consideration. When dealing with 5000+ people a year, do you think they would give special consideration to the daughter of a cousin of an employee? No..sorry it happened, but you are gonna have to call and talk to assignments, not the receptionist and the assignment person, who I know, is very personable and reasonable. If you can be switched, she will do it. You just have to know to ASK for the RIGHT PEOPLE. It's not who you know..it's in if you know what you need and what you are talking about. Best of luck!

I completely sympathize about the lack of manpower to handle the replies it would require to confirm with each and every student....but then why employ something like that in the first place if you can't afford the resources to pull it off fairly and right? I am assuming I am not the only one to call in about this and because of that, time and effort on the part of Res Life is wasted.
It would be a LOT easier to simply keep the 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice on the application form with the checkbox of having Res Life place you as close as possible to your first choice if it is not available. No calls asking what happened to their posting, no students angry about the fact they were moved out of where they wanted to go, and everyone is happy.
I'm not really directing this at you Aim, don't expect things will magically change because this is being said in the presence of someone who works there....I just wanted to vent and point out how completely retarded the way the system works because its obvious how it could be improved and yet it isn't. Especially since the process works against itself: they advise signing up early to get where you want....but oops, without telling you they move you out, apologize most profusely when you call, and explain that people who were waiting to get in (you know, the ones who applyed for that spot late) are now in your spot and now YOU have to be on the wait list and be limited to hope that something happens in the next...what....two weeks?
