You have more balls than I do, although I am the one with the balls. I would NEVER lash back at a customer. If things got out of hand, I would get a manager. I have had people get rude on me. I tried not to be rude back. The only thing I did was get the manager to sort things out. Half the time I was right; half the time he did what the customer wanted.
You're right.... you cant make everyone happy, but I want to make it to where it's never my fault because I didnt follow company guidelines and common sense.

It's not.. That's what managers are for, also..
When my wife worked at Wal-Mart, whenever she had an irate or difficult customer, she wouldn't hesitate to call a CSM over to handle the transaction..
Whenever I'm at work and a manager higher than me is there, I am more than glad to pass customers that require more "patience and understanding" than I have on to a higher manager.. Likewise when someone under me is having a hard time with a customer, I will take the call for them..
It's what we're paid more to do ...
It's always better to pass a customer on to someone who will "take their shit" than to retaliate at them.

Back in the days of high school, I used to manage the front end at Winn Dixie.
I remember those customers..those special customers..you could catch them with a turkey under their dress (trying to steal it), they would come in at 11:55pm when the store closed at 12am only to purchase half the store, they would complain about the governmental benefits if they couldn't get that special product they wanted, those rich people complaining that we don't have enough Perignon....ahh the memories....
...and through it all I would just smile, because that was what I was paid to do. Smiling also drives the irate customers nuts because they know that they aren't phasing you. Smiling also keeps your coworkers on check (even if it is fake). I used to tell my cashiers to smile like you are ending your shift in two minutes and you will have something to look forward to and you won't drag your shift in a pessimistic way!
However, after 3 years of doing that, and sometimes going home to still work there, it makes me really happy to be in college and knowing I will NEVER deal with that again after I graduate!!

tygachik700 should have waited a month or so to post this, that way it would have been a year since the last reply.

Come on... it is not that difficult to buy an ice-cream...
As far as the vending machine goes... I prefer to have a human being that sells the stuff.. the damn vending machine does not even smile...
On the other hand you cannot prevent some people from living in "stone age"- if that is what they prefer then one should let them to live that way

Brigid, I worked at Baskin Robbins for 8 months when I was 16-17, and I know EXACTLY what you're talking about.
I seriously hated it when big families waltzed in at 9:55 and ordered ridiculously hard to scoop ice cream and shakes (and yes, the malt powder smells like bad cheese). I think what was worse than families coming in right before closing, was when a group of teenagers came in with the munchies. Those are the type that won't leave until you actually pick up the phone at 10:15 and call the police. I don't mess around. There is entirely too much cleaning to be done to have to worry about a bunch of teenage potheads inhibiting my mopping or angering customers who wonder why I won't take their order when the lights are clearly on and there are customers inside the store.
I also dealed with many morons who misread labels and products. How is that people cannot pronounce the word "waffle"? It's a waffle cone, moron. Not wayful, or waffle with a short "a" sound. Additionally, we also have wafer cones. Waffle cones and wafer cones are two different products, genius.
Brigid, have you ever experienced free scoop night? I've worked it twice. It's like living in the devil's asshole for a night. The Baskin Robbins I worked at was in an area with a high concentration of a demographic that would label me as racist if I discussed it.
I've had to deal with customers in other retail situations, but it was just something about Baskin Robbins that made this job more stressful than others.

what a bunch of fucking whiney pussies.....if you dont want people showing up at 9:55, change the hours so you close at 9:55, then they'll be late. One of my favorite things to do is go to McD's at about 10:58, when I know the shake machine is nice and clean, and order a couple shakes. If you are going to sit there and bitch about scraping ice cream out of a fucking tub, get a real fucking job like the rest of us.

Brigid, that really sucks what you have to go through. You should really demand to be paid for doing all that. And not just once--every two weeks, and in the form of a check. Only then will it be fair.

I go to a REAL university, and have a REAL future...I don't need a "real" job.
Although, I could forgo all that and get a job checking people into a hotel, and sitting on my ass trolling a college website, digging up year old rants, and trying to sound superior...
BTW, showing up at the last minute to any place of business is just being an asshole. If you're 24 hours, you don't get that.
To the rest of you, this was a rant, I dont' feel like wasting my time discussing customer service, so STFU about it already!

a) I don't go to any university anymore. But the UOP is a real university as well. My lil piece of paper would have had the same weight as your little piece of paper, I just would have paid more for it.
b) I'm pretty sure I get a paycheck at the place where I sit on my ass (sometimes I even stand) and I bet if we took a poll there is more of a future in Hotel Management then there is with scooping ice cream.
c) I'm not the one who "dug up" the rant, if you would read a little bit before you open your mouth, you would have seen that Soyuz brought it up.
d) I am superior
e) If a place is open until 10pm, I have no problem showing up at 9:59pm. It's part of life.
f) nice to see you again
