Post subject: Volunteer oppurtunity.... Let's help the Katrina refugees |

Anyone who wants to get out and do something to help...
Go to the shelters here in Baton Rouge! There are several on LSU campus.
Go talk to refugees. Ask them if there is anyone they want to contact via e-mail to let them know they're alive and where they are.
Get names, e-mail addresses, ect.
Cell phones aren't getting through, but the internet it alive and kicking... let's use that to help some people.
Leave some legal pads and pens at the shelters to collect the info, then recruit a few students and get this info out there on the web.
LSU has electricity and internet, use the libraries if you have.

It's upsetting that Baton Rouge is going to become a cesspool like New Orleans. I apologize for insulting the city, but there was enough crime in Baton Rouge before the New Orleans scum came here.
I find it hard to sympathize with anyone but myself and my family when I have to go to the grocery store at 1am and carry a buck knife. It's very unsettling to know that the Walmart that I almost went to was robbed at about the same time I was getting food for my family- the legal way.
My next door neighbor is evacuating Baton Rouge. She's retired and she has lots of family in Texas, but it's a horrible thing when our own residents are having to flee the city from those who don't belong here. There aren't enough police to handle this. These people need to be shot.
So many people are being sheltered in the Assembly Center and Field House at my university. These people, being allowed to leave during the day, pose a huge threat to so many students (carrying laptops and cash).
I was sympathetic about New Orleans at first (I still am for those that haven't put a gun or knife in someone's face), but now all I mostly care about is the fact that Baton Rouge has too many people and not enough resources, our crime rate has octupled, and the lack of gasoline and the amount of traffic is preventing me from going on a much needed job search so I can pay my bills.
The rest of the nation is blubbering about how tragic it is and how much they sympathize with New Orleans- Would you like to take a few sewer rats off our hands? I'm sure tax payers will absolutely love the fact that part of their income went to the same guy that's holding the gun in their face.
If you live in Baton Rouge and work in any retail situation, then God be with you. New Orleans residents, Baton Rouge is not the edge of the world. Please keep going.

See, all these animals (the "sewer rats" as mrbandalifegsr puts it) are getting 99% of the media attention... I, however, followed orders to evacuate, and did.. and I feel like i'm getting crapped on ... FEMA is making us wait for temporary housing until they can "assess damages" and the Red Cross up here blew us off..
I'm stuck up here, with basically what I could pack into my car.. In a cramped house.. Away from everything I know..
The people that were rescued.. Yes they're much worse off, but I'm still a victim, too... I'm out of money here, and my in-laws can't really afford to be feeding 3 more mouths for too long.. At least the rescued have "3 hots and a cot" covered by the gov't already.
Maybe I'm just expecting too much .. It HAS only been 4 days since this all happened.. seems like forever though...
