Post subject: Party Etiquette Rule #32: Don't dis the host's music (rant) |
  |
|
Got the red-ass.
This last weekend (after T-day, after LSU-Ark) I invited neighborhood friends for a weenie roast over the fire-pit. Had an approximate idea in mind for the night's music line-up warming up with groovy sing-along tunes (i.e. famous tunes lots of people know the words to) progressing to ass-shakin punky dance stuff and cooling off with C&W.
Right off the bat, one of the guests complains about the tunes. Says "Put somethin else on!" which I did because I didn't want to ruin the party with a scene over music.
But pardon the fuck out of me, you weren't FORCED to be here, you haven't paid a fuckin cent for firewood or food, you didn't show up early to help with set-up, and every time we're at your place, I bite my lip through 5 fucking hours of lame-ass 70's era top-40 that makes me wanna pierce my fucking eardrums just because I enjoy the company.
So, now I been ridin a pisser for two whole fucking days. I mean to me this is one throbbing, rock-hard, purple headed rude move on the part of a guest. I don't give a fuck what music the host is playing, either suffer it or go someplace else and go play your own goddam music if it's THAT important. And believe me, I've suffered through entire nights of shit like Beatles and Aerosmith just to hang with the peeps. ... Shit, right now I don't even want this guy back in my space. Ever.
Tell me, youze TigerU's, am I right or over-reacting? Gimme props if I'm right. Set me straight if I'm outta line.

Is the "lame-ass 70's eta top-40" music you refer to what we call classic rock? The Beatles really didnt come from the 70s is why I ask. I dont think classic rock is lame-ass. In my opinion, people know classic rock stuff better than the booty-shakin music.
If you intended on your party to be a big dancing gig, then yes the booty-shakin music is appropriate. Yet, if it's just a get-together, then the classic rock is more appropriate. But I do agree with you that it was rude of that guy to do that. Next time just kick his ass out the door.

Yeah that was very shitty of whoever that was to complain about the music that was played at your house during YOUR function.
And I just have to ask whose house are you going to where they're playing 70's pop music? like disco lol? I would advise you stay away from there.. just because..
Classic rock n' roll on the other hand.. not too shabby. You got your British acts, rolling stones, pink floyd, led zeppelin while your Americans were the eagles, boston, van halen, lynyrd skynyrd among others.. Sorry I went off but I can't get enough of that stuff. Beatles really made their inital pierce in the sixties and broke up later in the seventies.

If you want YOUR Party to be a sucess, you have to cater to your guests.
If you had shitty music, people would leave early, same as if you had shitty food and the next time you had a party nobody would show. When you have a party you want to keep people happy.

gotta agree, the host's duty is to keep the guests happy - otherwise, they're gonna feel about your shindig the way you said you feel about theirs - that they had to suffer thru your shitty sounds just to be with you. next time you're the guest, go ahead & make your own comments/requests - or get a consensus on what most people wanna hear

I'm just wondering why we weren't invited
Also, what are the previous 31 rules?
As for my opinion, I prefer whatever music is being playing not to be obvious otherwise it's evidence to me that no one can hear anyone else during the party due to the music volume.
What sort of music were you playing specifically?
You said it was stuff people would know the words to.. but complained about classic Rock.. which is some of the best known stuff.
Unfortunately you can't please everyone...

Thanks for the responses.
I agree to a large extent with the host making guests happy. And, well, I wonder where that boundary stops. Maybe it stops at different places for different people. Like do I have to give out dollar bills or ask my girl to offer free hand jobs to the guys?
For me, music is an important part of a party, table arrangements (for example) are not. I'll spend days (off and on) thinking about the music line-up. But I don't give a shit if the potato chips are served in a crystal bowl or in the bag. Mr. Twister's parties (hopefully) are remembered for the tunes, not the food. From this point of view, am I obligated to satisfy my guests musical complaints? As far as I'm concerned, they can leave and I really won't mind.
Some 70's is ok. I don't mean to be argumentative, but Beatles, Who, Rollin Stones, Eagles, REO, Aeroshit, etc. just don't fit my taste. Now, AC/DC, Scorps, Van Halen (W/ D.L. Roth), and Metallica I like. But I'm mostly into punk, heavy metal, garage, psychadelic, rock-a-billy, gospel, and even trance (I fucking LOVE trance but I wouldn't bust it out at a party).
"What are rules 1 - 31?"
DuUUuh!
Everyone knows rule # 1: "A woman is obliged to wear a tight shirt with no bra to a party." 'Party' is from the French 'partir' which means to go or leave, as in "leave yer bra at home".
Rule #2: Dude must keep his shirt (with short or long sleeves) and pants on at ALL times. No one wants to see yer man-nipples or yer ding-dong.
Rule #3: DO NOT ask your guests to pay for anything or share the cost of anything. Even if it's something they break. If you don't want it broke, put it away in a safe place. IT'S A PARTY, DUMBASS!! If you gonna ask, do it ahead of time - then if the person agrees to help pay, he/she becomes a co-host and has equal say in the party arrangements.

Oh yeah, the "sing-alongs" were old Roy Orbison tunes.
Volume low. Enough to hear if you're not in a conversation, don't notice it if you're in one (and not shouting).
