I glanced in the mirror and was thoroughly disgusted. I was so fixated on the image. I shook it and agonized on my reflection for approximately three seconds. I plunged my hands into the warm water and stroked each finger with equal consideration, and then scrubbed harder. At school, Jenny asked what was wrong with my hands. I hated myself forgetting. Why did I take the gloves off? So, I lied. Bleach is horribly toxic and it burns ruthlessly. They would be better soon.
I didn’t want to look. The water wasn’t warm anymore. It was pink with the life of my fingers, and I felt myself choke. They were so filthy. They no longer looked like my hands. My hands were the root of my sin and I would make them the source of my redemption.
I unwrapped another bar of soap and wished I wouldn’t feel the pain.
