Yeah, I love when people point at the menu board on THEIR side of the counter... I usually make some exaggerated effort to peer over the counter and read upside-down...
I hate when people put the money (ESPECIALLY COINS) on the counter.. I usually make sure to fail at least 5 times to pry the coin off the counter before picking it up..

It's just damned rude to put the money on the counter...
Usually when the people ask "what's in this?" I say, "Well let's see, let me READ the tag here..."
That's just when I've had enough.

I love it!
Don't you people understand that you're not getting paid to just run a register/scoop ice cream/make pizza/give head?? You're getting paid to make the customer happy!! Fancy that! You know, if Baskin robbins wanted people who had that attitude about their customers, they'd forego the employees altogether and seel their ice cream in machines with the coke and candy bars.
I'm not saying the customers can't be dipshits sometimes...but that doesn't matter. You get paid to make that company look good. And I'm sorry, putting the change on the counter isn't the end of the world. In fact, I get pissed off if you expect me to hand it to you. I'M the one PAYING YOU.
The other day I read a live journal entry by this girl who thought it was rude of the CUSTOMER to interrupt her(the employee's) cell phone call while she was in the middle of ringing up the customer's purchase.
I've had my share of customer troubles. I've been a cashier, a secretary, a hostess, a waitress, a salesperson. I know all about how trying a job can be. But you know, the better the attitude you have, the easier it is to do your job.

I think every person should be required to work a service industry job at least once in their life, just so they can see how it feels to be on that side of the counter/table/etc.
Funky is right, it is the job to do good customer service... But people can ask the stupidest questions and they don't even realize how dumb it sounds, and be soo rude and not even realize how it feels to be on the receiving end of it. I think if everyone had to work a service job at least once, they'd have a little more respect/decency toward service workers!!

People like those are the very reason I cannot have a job dealing with the public in any way. I have an extremely low tolerance for stupidity and a tendency towards violence when I'm pushed too far. So you see it just wouldn't work out that well

Yes...?

So that give me no right to complain? I find it quite refreshing to complain about things that annoy me.. That way, I don't complain about them to the customer I'm trying to make happy. By complaining about work when i'm away from work, it allows me to find the annoying things to be really funny. Like when people call, and immediately put me on hold and you hear "Hey! What do y'all want? .... No, Domino's! .... They sell pizza!" .. It's always fun telling that story to coworkers, and have them agree that they've had the same thing happen..
| Quote: | | And I'm sorry, putting the change on the counter isn't the end of the world. |
No, it's not.. But who's to say I can't complain on my off-time? Plus, when they PLACE the money on the counter, it's not so bad.. When they THROW it on the counter it kinda annoys me.. I'm not some cheap stripper that you can throw your money at.

Now that's just dumb. I usually only get bitchy about genuinely rude customers.

First of all, you can't put a banana split, or a shake, or a sundae, for that matter, in a vending machine.
And as far as the customer paying me, the least they can do is treat me like a human being. The cashier doesn't like to be mistreated any more than an *actual* person, believe it or not. Last time I checked, I wasn't paid to be Baskin Robbins' whore. I get paid to provide the service and be civil to the customers, and to help them with their needs, NOT to be treated like I AM a vending machine.
As far as the complaining aspect of this, EVERYONE has a right to complain...hence the placement of this rant in "Free Speech Alley." When customers do stupid things, things which constantly annoy me, I feel it's better to vent than to go postal. In fact, I'd encourage EVERYONE to complain about the idiocy of the public...hell, with so many of us in the service industry, I think it deserves its own forum...I mean there's already a "food" forum and a "redneck" forum, why not a "stupid people" forum??

I completely agree about just about everything you said. Customers suck, especially in Baton Rouge, like I have never seen in my life! Working at Cane's I saw some of the most idiotic people ever. And, guess what, its NOT my job to make the customer happy. That is the manager's job. My job is to take the customer's order and give them their food. I dont have to put up with anyone's bullshit. I have been rude back before and have never been complained about. People know when they are wrong. Like, ordering in the drivethru with your window halfway up so that it covers your mouth!?!?! Also, things like not picking up your own food when trash cans are 2 ft away and putting a coin under the salt shaker so you can break it, throwing your money on the counter and then looking at me like I am an asshole when I put your change on the counter, and falling asleep in the drivethru. C'mon people! I promise you that no matter where I go, I am super nice to whomever is serving me and give a nice tip. I understand what kind of bullshit they have to go thru and hardly EVER complain. Guess what.... the customer is NOT always right.

You're right that the customer is not always right, but I disagree with you that its not your job to make the custmer happy. You should try to make the customer happy with great service, and you should try to do everything possible to make them happy. However, if they want something for free that you charge for, you cant make them happy unless your manager agrees to it.
True story: Jackie Sherrell, former football coach at Mississippi State, went into Abner's (similar to Canes) and asked for extra Abner's sauce with his chicken. When the cashier said how much the extra sauce was, he got upset. Finally the manager came out and gave him the sauce for free. In this case, you have to do what you're supposed to do and charge. It's the manager's decision whether to override normal protocol.

Ok, c'mon. You have to realize that you can NEVER make all of the customer's happy. Its not possible. And with the way people act sometimes, they are just plain rude b/c they want to vent out on someone. I am sure not going to let it be me just b/c they chose my place of work. I am not someone's punching bag and if I did nothing wrong then it is not my business to cater to their every whim. Why the hell should the former football coach have gotten upset about the price of sauce, which was probably mere change? Why is it the employee's duty to take his shit when he is the one acting like an asshole? Customers should not dish it out if they cant take it. And, although I have never gotten fired for it, I have given it back to customers who are just being asses for no reason and 9 times out of 10, when called on it, they apologize. They KNOW they are wrong.
