Oklahoma City – Before the season even began, the LSU Tiger softball team felt slighted.

Picked to finish no better than second in the SEC West. Picked to finish no better than third overall in the conference. A Women’s College World Series-caliber team? Hardly.

But spurred by the empty feeling that came with finishing 2003 empty-handed, the Tigers attacked 2004 with a vengeance, and when the dust finally settled the team had come within reach of becoming the first squad east of the Mississippi River to play in the WCWS Championship game.

All they needed to do was win three elimination games in one day, against the No. 4 and No. 2-ranked teams in the nation.

Facing near insurmountable odds, the team took the field on May 30 knowing that one loss would send them home to Baton Rouge–nothing short of three wins would put them through to the championship game.

The task proved to be too much though, and a four-run fifth inning by the No. 2 California Bears in the third and final game of the day game proved to be LSU’s undoing, and the team fell 4-1, one victory short of a berth in the championship.
