By RYAN SHAWThe LSU baseball team’s last series sweep came with the conclusion of the February 29 game against Texas State University. Since then, the Tigers have set a trend of winning two out of three games a weekend.
Since the late February sweep, the Tigers have played 11 three-game series. LSU won two games in 10 of those 11 series. Their only deviation from the two-win trend came when Arkansas swept the Tigers in early April.
The Tigers deviated from the trend once again when they swept their first series since February. Although it was not a traditional three-game series versus one opponent, LSU played three games and won them all.
LSU played host to three Division I teams over the weekend in one of 16 regionals held across the country. The Black Knights of Army, the Cougars of the College of Charleston and the Golden Eagles of the University Southern Mississippi traveled to Baton Rouge to fight for a spot in a super regional. LSU faced all three teams and, in unusual fashion for this squad, swept through the weekend.
On Friday LSU met Army in game one of the regional. Sophomore right-hander Justin Meier took the mound for LSU against the Patriot League’s Pitcher of the year, freshman Nick Hill. Although he recorded the best pitching season in West Point baseball history with a 10-2 record and a 2.24 ERA, Hill only lasted 6 1/3 innings against the Tigers.
