By RYAN SHAWThe LSU Baseball team managed to gain ground in the SEC western division race over the weekend despite having to trudge through an outfield of standing water and a muddy infield.
The weekend’s ungodly rains stopped long enough for the Tigers (34-12, 12-9) to take two of three from the Alabama Crimson Tide (26-20, 7-14). The Tigers moved into a tie for second place with the Ole Miss Rebels after losing a single game Saturday and sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday.
Saturday’s play by the Tigers was almost as sloppy as the field they played on. The Tigers committed two errors and gave up six runs in one inning on their way to an 8-2 loss Saturday. Starting pitcher Clay Dirks picked up his first loss of the season when he gave up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings. Dirks committed one of the Tigers’ two errors, struck out four and walked only one in his short performance. One bright spot in the game was the play of relief pitcher Jordan Faircolth, who pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed only one run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
