By DAMIAN FOLEYWhen the LSU softball team took the field for their highly-anticipated clash with Baylor at the NCAA Regionals in Waco, Texas, they did so with nerves wound so tightly that the players’ knuckles were as white as their uniforms.
One glance into the stands changed all of that.
Standing behind the team dugout, with pale white chests painted purple and gold to spell “L-S-U T-I-G-E-R-S”, were the friends and family members of several Tiger players, including second baseman Sara Fitzgerald, pitcher Kristin Schmidt, utility player Kassi Mikulik, and designated player Lauren Castle.
The team stopped laughing long enough to beat the Bears 7-3, and, sufficiently loosened up, knocked off Illinois the next day to advance to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
And, naturally, as they had done for every game during the regular season, the friends and family members followed the team to Oklahoma to cheer the Tigers on, and promptly turned the World Series on its head.
