By DAMIAN FOLEYI’m going to kick this—my first column of the summer—off by saying a big thank you to everyone who gave Kristin Schmidt an ovation when she threw out the first pitch at the baseball game on Sunday. Welcome to the bandwagon.
For those of you still in the dark, let me recap what you missed over the last month.
On May 12, the LSU softball team boarded a bus for Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on the best in the SEC at the conference tournament.
When they returned home to Baton Rouge on May 31, they had claimed the SEC crown, the NCAA Regional title, the third-place spot at the Women’s College World Series, and the hearts of softball fans nationwide.
You want proof of that last one? Look no further than Ms. Schmidt herself.
During the three week span, Schmidt won 11 games, lost only twice, registered one save, was named Most Outstanding Player of the SEC Tournament, NCAA Regional, and World Series, struck out 107 batters in 94 innings, was featured on ESPN’s Page 2, and trumped softball pinup girl Jennie Finch as the star attraction at the WCWS.
