By RHONDA HOLLENIf you opted to skip town the first part of summer break, then you missed two very noteworthy LSU events.
In front of perhaps one of his more younger and influential audiences, President George W. Bush arrived at LSU on Friday, May 21, to inaugurate the university’s 3,162 new graduates for the 253rd commencement services.
The Pete Maravich Center was filled nearly to capacity for the graduation exercises. Security was tight even days in advance, and those attending the graduation had to pass through metal detectors, having all bags, purses and video equipment thoroughly searched. Noisemakers were strictly forbidden, but some did manage to make their own voices heard by screaming out “You the man,” “Bush and Chaney” and “Four more years” when the president stepped up the podium to deliver his address.
In the 16-minute speech that granted five standing ovations, the president spoke of five important lessons he picked up along the way, which included references of time management, choosing acquaintances, moral truth, listening to your mother, and being thankful for all types of success.
