By ELENA GUERRAIt has been said that in Louisiana we mark the passing of time by four seasons: King Cake, Crawfish, Hurricane, and Football seasons. With Mardi Gras over and crawfish season coming to an end, temperatures in our oceans and seas are beginning to warm and became favorable for the development of those massive storms we call hurricanes.
Hurricane Season officially began on June 1. Each year, Dr. William M. Gray, professor at Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences, issues his predictions concerning quantity, intensity and impact of named storms. The meteorological world has trusted his predictions for many years.
For the past one hundred years, there has been an average of six hurricanes per season in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Basin. This year he predicts eight, two more than normal, a 25 percent increase.
