In that issue we published two photos showing the decapitated body of civilian contractor, Paul Johnson. We have received many letters as well as heard comments from readers over the telephone and on websites.
Even the Reveille took their own ‘shot across the bow’ when they published an editorial written by students at the University of Oregon which felt such images are better left in the darkroom. Some have questioned our motives for showing the photos -- implying it was done for shock value in order to gain readership. Kind of like the Reveille showing pictures of dildos in last semester’s paper, I suppose.
Perhaps the editorial disclaimer beneath last week’s photos was not enough. So here in full detail is why I, as publisher, chose to run the photos.
