By ASHLEY YELDELLWelcome to college youngsters! After 18 long years, you are finally an independent young adult. You are living on your own, waking up whenever you want and cooking your own meals…well let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Before you declare your new found freedom with reckless abandonment, it is important to keep a few things in mind. We have compiled a list, along with some personal suggestions, to help you make it through, not only your freshman year, but the next four…or five…or six years at LSU.
Hang on to that syllabus. The syllabus, which most likely a new word in your vocabulary, is probably the single most important document that you will receive in a class. It includes a description of the class, lecture subjects, test dates, the professor’s office location and most importantly, when the final is. Be sure to keep it handy and try not to ask the professor a question that can be easily found by referencing the syllabus.
Venture into the library. While it is hard to believe, some students fail to ever enter that massive building looming over the south end of the Quad. Well allow me to introduce you. Middleton Library….wee freshman….wee freshman….Middle Library. Of course a number of books can be found in the library that are sure to come in handy for all those research papers, but the library serves other purposes as well. It is a great place to check your email between classes or play a quick game of solitaire to kill some time. Oh yeah, its quiet atmosphere is a great study location as well.
Talk to your teacher. Finding yourself in the midst of a 300 person Biology class can be a bit daunting, and unless you are a huge suck up or smell funny, it is unlikely that your teacher will notice you. It is important to stop by your professor’s office during office hours and simply introduce yourself. Check in before or after tests. This way the teacher will recognize your face, see that you actually care and is more likely to help you out if you need that extra point at the end of the semester.
