By BRENNAN DAVIDEvery person in the state of Louisiana knows that the 2003 national champions open their season Saturday night at 5 p.m. against the Oregon State Beavers in Tiger Stadium.
It has been 72 years since a team from the state of Oregon has won a game in Baton Rouge. OSU, however, was not that team. LSU will meet the Beavers for the first time since 1982 when the Tigers posted a 45-7 victory in Tiger Stadium to improve to 3-0 all-time against OSU.
In the effort to publicize the game of the week, the football Gods have sent the cast and crew of ESPN’s College Gameday to the LSU campus for Saturday’s match up. Chris Fowler, Kirk Herb, Lee Corso and Jill Arrington will be on hand to lead Tiger fans to kick off.
The Tigers have been gearing up for one of the most anticipated seasons in LSU football history since the spring, and with 11 starters returning from last season, fans should have plenty to cheer about.
“I think in early games, where you are more prone to make mistakes… good teams don’t make the kind of mistakes that give them big plays,” said head coach Nick Saban. “You take care of the ball, you don’t turn it over, and the combination of those two things determines the outcomes of games probably as much as anything.”
