If you are like most college students, exercise isn’t something that starts your day off or ends your evening. Between a full-time school load and the usual after school jobs, there is just no time to even think about working out after homework starts, if you do that sort of thing. All you want to do is relax with any free time that you’re allotted, but then you feel slightly guilty for not toning up like you said you would or loosing those few extra pounds that snuck up on you from the day you started college.

If you meet the previous criteria, even by the slightest phrase, then believe it or not you have hope. The LSU Rec Center has been offering classes that are bound to fit into your schedule. From kickboxing to yoga fit, and power pump to gutts n’ butts, there is something at the Rec for everyone. Despite the many classes offered, there is one exercise that has caught the attention of many students and adults. This renowned type of exercise is the seven letter word known as Pilates. Stemmed from the 1920s, developed by Joseph Pilates, it was used in interment camps to help condition internees during WWI. Not only has the technique been pretty well perfected since then, it’s also making its way into the top exercises of the world.

“Pilates helps to build a person’s core strength, which includes the rectus abdominus, external and internal obliques, the transverse abdominus, erector spinae, and several other lower back muscles,” said Emily Schlumbrecht, Fitness Graduate Assistant for the Department of Recreational Sports and Pilates Instructor. “It also increases flexibility.” Being that Pilates is one of the fastest growing exercises in today’s society, it’s bound to be working. “Pilates is a relaxing type of exercise, so it has a relaxing effect on students,” she said. “It can help them de-stress after a long day of work and school, while still giving them a good workout.”
