I am guessing it is not one question, that she is looking for a whole interview.

I'm not a qualified technician (I could probably pass the A+ exam), but I do know a good bit about fixing/building computers.

Wow, well I know the folks to go to when I decide to build...
So how much cash does it take to get a good motherboard, nice case, cpu, good amt. of ram, one of those super video cards (though less than $300)...and maybe water cooling? AMD or Intel doesn't matter...my most sketchy area is that of motherboards and how you can tell what is good amongst them.
What do yall think about RAID arrays? Comp guy at school said they are not all that, but I think it would still be crazy fast (on the all speed setting, of course)

Good Motherboard: Something from Abit or ASUS. The IC7-g MaxII from Abit is a nice one. I'd recommend the MaxIII but I think they're being discontinued. The MaxII is a socket478 board, and it doesn't have PCI express, but why not just put a 3.2E on it and be done with it for a while. That mobo is $130
When looking for a motherboard, look for good brands like ASUS, MSI, Abit. Abit is my favorite. Great overclocking boards if you get the right one. Intel chipsets are almost a must in my opinion.
Processor: well I since I recommended an intel motherboard, i guess I should recommend an intel processor. 3.2E is a fine choice, a great price right now too. You can get it on ebay for $200 if you look hard enough.
Watercooling: DONT buy a kit! DIY. If you want watercooling, be prepared for fork over about $200 on some good quality stuff.
For more info on what to buy for watercooling, E-mail me: StephenP2003@cox.net or AIM StephenP85. I've built a few watercooled systems for customers.
Video cards: ATI all the way. Google if you don't agree. Anyways, New generation cards are expensive, so just get a 9800 pro, flash it to 9800XT, and congratulations, you have a kickass card that you paid less than $200 for.
RAM: you're obviously into gaming and overclocking, so A gig of ram is a good choice. Either spend $169 on Corsair Value select DDR400, or shell out upwards of $250-300 for some faster RAM that can handle tighter timings and help overclocking. I'm happy with my Corsair value select though.
nice case: If you want internal watercooling, just get a big case. I'd go with Antec or Thermaltake. You're lookin at $75-100
Now, if you want to move into the next generation of stuff (PCI express, DDR2, LGA775, Extreme editions) then you're looking at more $$$
RAID: doesnt matter a lot unless you are going to shell out cash for raptors. 7200rpm SATAs are cheap
Ryan_gusto: is that a challenge?

I would disagree with just about all of what you recommend. Based on one factor, cost.
…Abit and Asus make great stuff but they are not always their on drivers. MSI is feature rich but not necessary awesome for other stuff. Over clocking CPUs is not for regular people and if you want to spend your time playing PC games, you do not necessarily want to messing around with your hardware all the time. Intel on the desktop is crazy expensive. Now don’t get me wrong your suggestions would create the Cadillac of PC’s but at what cost?
Water cooling, you don’t need it unless you are going to overclock, and like I said before overclocking is for over clocking enthusiasts, not necessarily PC gamers.
Raid is great, but you don’t really need it. The real issue is that fat 32 works better for raid, but ntfs is better for every thing else. If you want to see the benefit of raid if you have a separate disk for your OS, then have all your games installed on the raid you will notice much faster load times on maps. But unless every one else you are playing with also are using this then its not going to hurt you really. If you are playing single player ask your self if 10 seconds vs. 30 seconds to load a map is worth the extra cost.
Motherboard/CPU: Shuttle AN35N can be found online for about around $30. add AMD 2600 XP ($70) or the mobile if you must over clock.
Ram: 1 Gig is useful for most games in XP. Two sticks of corsair. I have used the value line, it does not OC at all, the XMS costs more but you can get a bit more out of it. I would say for cost… Corsair value line, 2 X $80.
Video card. I agree what ever card you want to flash the bios up on is fine both are about 200 bucks now. I personally at the $300 price point the Nvidia 6800 is not bad.
I would say get a VIA ENVY chip set sound card, about $25. It may do more for your frame rate than any other $25 you can invest.
Cases are a matter of personally style. Also if you are going to sell your computer later, like when you get a new one, it may be difficult to convince some one your case is worth what you paid for it. If you are going for pure pimp custom looks… get a 30 dollar case and get it painted at maaco or miracle. (do they have maaco in Louisiana?) In Missouri it would cost me about 30 bucks to get a case custom painted in single or faded paints, twice that for chrome accents, or graphics. But not every one cases about case painting at all.
Antec has nice cases, but you can get cheep cases that you will be happy with for a lot less, having a nice case is really only a benefit if you are in and out of it all the time.
