By Elena GuerraDo you believe in ghosts, deja vu or near-death experiences? What about ESP? No matter what stand you take on unexplainable phenomenon, the topics of Religion 3010 offer an interesting alternative to your conventional electives.
Taught by Dr. C. Gary Pettigrew Ph.D., this 3-hour course introduces students to the strange world of parapsychology. Religion 3010 covers many areas including exorcism, clairvoyance, witchcraft and telekinesis. Students are exposed to a variety of readings, experiments and TV clips dealing with everything from alien abductions to angels.
“I hope students will develop both tolerance for diverse belief systems, though different from their own, and critical thinking regarding reports of the extraordinary,” said Pettigrew. “We examine phenomena as they are presented by testimonial or dogmatic literature, and also as scientifically explored by experiment or critique. In general, I try not to impose my own notions about fact vs. fiction, as I hope to encourage students to think through these claims for themselves.”
