If a student has all their student loans in their name, but dies after graduation, would their parents have to pay back the loan, even if it wasn't in their name?

That is a successions question, (in La.). From my poor understanding of the topic, since I have yet to take the class, if you accept any part of the decedent's estate, you accept the outstanding debts as well. Being that a student typically has little things of actual value, may be better for parents to deny the succession and outstanding educational debts. (Sneak someone in to grab all the sentimental stuff.) This is no legal advice etc.

No, your parents are not liable for it since it's "unsecured." It's like credit cards... if a family member dies, they cant repossess it. (if I understand right)
