I may be the only one that feels this way, but I think that a lot of stuff these "9/11 families" do is selfish. These people bring their tears and pictures of dead relatives to push legislation and such. How can these people use their dead relatives to play politics?
Like this week with the intelligence reform bill, these families brought their pictures and got together and held hands to be sure something passed, no matter if the stuff was worth anything or not. I believe this is rude and selfish.

Dealing with the loss of family can be very traumatic. I am not surprised that they want something to do.
What really stuns me is why the 1995/1996 counter terrorism bills and acts that were inspired by the 1993 expanded the power of the FBI. The bombing would not have been possible except because of the help of people working for the FBI. This legislation increased moneys to the FBI substantially.
The 1995 evaluation of risk for the WTC center evaluated the building. Fire on the upper floors of the buildings was identified as being a structural risk to the entire building. Making the building fire resistant was bid out. Several affordable solutions were presented. They were evaluated to be expensive and did not move forward on a plan. The cost of the plan as far as I know none of the bids exceeded 25 million dollars in cost. I think the exact numbers are public but I believe they had a base cost of around 2 million in materials and the remainder being the cost of labor (meaning this project would have created many jobs) and displacing people while work was being done in the building. Similarly the man who made the bomb (Emad Salem FBI employee under direct super vision by an FBI agent ) with government money was paid 1 million for his testimony, to help convict a group of Muslims who plotted to use the bomb. The bills passed authorized 1 billion in spending, 100 million for the ATF who had just done the branch divedian thing down in Texas.
If anyone ever says that attacks like 9/11 can be prevented by spending money on intelligence programs, remind them that such money made it possible to bomb the WTC in 93.
I wish the family’s affected by 9/11 not but as much trust in the intelligence organizations that only recommend to appropriate money for intelligence work and limiting our freedoms.

they are just outside wall, poor citizens who are easily manipulated. We cannot blame them.

As long as the families of the dead don't start abusing the honor of those dead by, example: "My husband din't die in the WTCB just so you can widen HWY 190." or "Me and the other survors of the WTCB attack don't support Prez Bush's choice for Secretary of State." I can give them some leeway but noot enough that they should be able to influence congress by bypassing their senator or congressman.

ummmmm.... I realize this was originally an old thread but I'm going to comment anyway...
I'm pretty sure that most people are not "using dead relatives for selfish reasons". They don't want their loved ones to die in vain, and they don't want others to have to lose their loved ones for a similar cause.
It's called motivation to get off your arse and do something, and I find it noble, not selfish.

Actually Michelle originally it was a new thread and then with time it became old.

I take it you didn't like what got passed?
