By Glenn DavisThis week, audiences everywhere were given the long awaited movie adaptation to the book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Now, I must admit, I haven’t read the book, but that hasn’t stopped me from enjoying the Harry Potter movies, so I really wasn’t worried. Well, unfortunately for me, Hitchhiker’s Guide really appeals to those who have read the book and leaves all others wanting more.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy begins with the main character, Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman), having a very bad day. When Arthur wakes up, a demolition crew is outside ready to bulldoze his house. Then Arthur’s best friend, Ford Prefect (Mos Def), shows up with the unsettling news that he is actually an alien. Ford warns Arthur of the Earth’s impending destruction, and the two of them narrowly escape. Then Arthur and Ford begin an amazing adventure throughout the galaxy, using Ford’s book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy to help them on their way. They eventually team up with the two-headed President of the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell), and the group gets into all sorts of madcap antics. While this is a very original story, and many of the scenes (especially in the beginning of the film) are quite funny, I just felt as if I wasn’t getting all I could out of Hitchhiker’s Guide.
