By Jeff SmithpetersAcademic Affairs has withdrawn a proposal that would have eliminated Fall Break and dead days and begun the 2006-07 school year after Labor Day. The proposal touched off a minor uproar, with registrar Robert Doolos appearing to distance himself from it in the April 21 “Daily Reveille.” According to the article, Doolos said his own calendar proposal had differed very little from those of previous years.
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Risa Palm, meanwhile, told the student newspaper in an email that her intent was to extend the time when students could work summer jobs and internships. Palm offered no explanation for her idea to do away with Fall Break and dead days.
Frank Cartledge, the Vice Provost in charge of Academics and Planning, said the proposal generated so many objections from those in the University community that there are now no plans to put it into effect.
“We got enough comments that we’re not going with that calendar,” Cartledge explained in an interview Tuesday afternoon. “We always do distribute the proposed about this time. Most commonly we get almost no comments, but this was sufficiently different it caught people’s attention.”
