Post subject: Scientology 101: The truth behind the hype |
  |
|
| By Ryan Hess America’s most bewildering new couple has revived a public interest in the 50-year-old ‘religion’ called Scientology. With a reputation for involving his romances with the mysterious religion (Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz), Tom Cruise does it again with his new fiancée, and co-star of “Batman Begins,” Katie Holmes. His involvement and relationship with Scientology goes back to the mid-eighties, when he was introduced to the group by then wife, Mimi Rogers. He claims that, initially, the Scientology techniques on learning development assisted with overcoming dyslexia at the beginning of his career. So what exactly is Scientology and what’s behind all the hype?
According to its official website, Scientology is one of the “fastest growing religious movements on earth.” It is currently a popular religion among celebrities and many and other well-known individuals such as: John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Juliette Lewis, Charles Manson, Priscilla Presley, Isaac Hayes, Kirstie Alley, Sonny Bono, and Patrick Swayze. With Katie Holmes as its newest A-list addition, we witness an effective formula for the continuation of this incessantly controversial group.
Although we will be printing a more in depth feature about Scientology over the next few weeks, we would like to introduce some basics about the group and its history.

I read the article. Got some of the facts straight, but not all. The Purification Rundown is done to eliminate physical impurities. Not spiritual ones.
"Thetan" is another word for spirit or soul with the idea that everyone is a spirit or soul. What the article refers to is "body thetans". So that's yet another mistake. One does deal with bts through a certain type of Scientology auditing. That's absolutely correct. However, there are also dozens of other types and varieties of auditing.
Hubbard may or may not have said he wanted to start a religion to make money, however, that quote has been attributed to a number of other people and there are many critics of Scientology who do not attribute this quote to the afore-mentioned Hubbard.

AnonEMouse, you're splitting hairs about the whole bt/auditing thing.
If scientologists want their religion to be treated more fairly and with better understanding, they should stop being so outright evasive and misleading. Not long ago, members of he church were outside Walden Books in Cortana. And I distinctively heard them offer a "stress test" to people passing by, when in reality they had an E-meter on hand.
Furthermore, if you go to the church of scientology website and read, you'll notice there are next to no quotes from any of Hubbard's works no matter how long you sift through the various pages. Why is this?
The sources for the quotes by Hubbard in the story are listed. You might disagree with whether or not they were ever spoken by Hubbard, but this does not change the fact those people claimed Hubbard said such things.
And Trunks, get a clue.
The majority of the articles in TW come from freelance writers. The burden of fact checking falls on the individual writer for the most part. The editors do what they can from there. If you find something incorrect, then you should write a letter to the editor about it, not claim Tigerweekly never checks its facts.

Get a clue about what? What is your point…
You are agreeing with me.
The editors themselves don’t have time to do it. Sure.
The editors do what they can? No they don’t! They could hire some fact checkers!
I could spend every week writing to the editor of the tigerweekly about errors. Guess what the errors in the newspaper do not hurt ad sales. So the TW could really care less.

I hoped poor grammar would dissuade you from making a rebuttal. Perhaps you are a tiger weekly editor and just happen not to notice things like that.

Don't make claims unless you back it up with some evidence. And I'm talking something egregious, not the little things every newspaper in the world screws up from time to time. And not something you've read in an editorial or column you disagree with.

I apologize if you think I am being rash.
Its not my goal to “bring down” the TW. And I am not talking about matters of opinion, I am talking about facts, creatively rewriting other articles (while slightly changing the content), and just plainly getting terminology wrong.
Why don’t you take a few minutes to read the old forum posts on this site that are related to “little” mix ups on the tiger weekly. I don t need to point out anything new the people that really care about the content go to the internet site for the tiger weekly, then come to tigerU to comment on the errors.
I pick up the newspaper for a chuckle then to find out what the bar specials are and what music is around town.
All you need do is read the archives.
